Hi, I'm Peter Bunny. On my blog I will rant about all things motorcycle safety (and
Other Sillines). Bikes can be so much fun, they can also provide you the means to mangle and kill yourself in not so nice ways.

There is a new law that is being debated in Michigan that will allow you to opt out of wearing a helmet. AAA is out against it and cites statistics that indicate huge increases in costs and fatalities associated with repealing helmet laws.

But I think people should have the right to choose not to wear one if they don't want to. I've heard the arguments about increased health bills in the event of a crash, but I think if you don't want to wear a helmet, there should not be a law that says you have to wear one. In that case, you may buy inferior equipment to comply with the law, and some studies have shown that the brain buckets are worse than nothing in higher speed crashes. It's a personal responsibility thing, I guess. | | (Edit Comment) |
In that case, do you think that people should have a right not to wear a seat-belt? What about the right to get a tag and title for a car without car insurance? There are all sorts of laws that are on the books that require us to purchase things and/or behave in certain ways to keep costs down for the general public.
If it didn't end up costing the rest of us more money in health care and insurance, I'd have no problem with it. But since the studies seem to indicate that it does cost more, I think it should be just as mandatory as wearing a seatbelt.

Yes

Insurance is a state sponsored racket... however, I do think a minimum level of safety is required with cars. I can gravely injure or kill someone else with my car... I can't think of how I can hurt someone else by not wearing a helmet, or a seatbelt for that matter.
At one point, there were no seat belt laws, no car seat laws, etc. Once these laws are on the books, where do you draw the line at enforcement? Is it OK for the police to use night vision glasses to see if people are wearing their seat belt (btw that happened in the county I live in)? What's the appropriate punishment for not wearing a helmet, other than a stupid ticket? | | (Edit Comment) |
